    Description

    Up for sale is a
very rare checkerboard advertising piece for Sapolio, a very popular household soap from the late 1800's. T
his checker and chess board has great colors, black, red/orange and tan, and is in very good condition.  A few minor scrubs, but all complete with no tears or flaws. Totally readable.
The board contains many quips and slogans around the edge of the board. For instance, "A handful of dirt may be a house full of shame. Use Sapolio". Another is "Well-bred-- soon wed. Girls who use Sapolio are quickly married." And one more example, "Great men, like Sapolio, waste themselves to make the world brighter."  You'll love all 16 of these quips.
This board was copyrighted in 1895 by Artemus Ward. I believe he was directly related to an Artemus Ward who was a general in the Revolutionary War. He was born in 1848 and died in 1925. Not a surprise, he was the Advertising Manager for Sapolio Soap, Enoch Morgan and Sons Company.

This board measures about 11 3/4" square when it's unfolded, but is only 5 3/4" when folded up.
