Northern Plains Headdress non-Indian madeThis modern creation is most closely associated by artistic license with the various Northern Plains societies largely known as Strong Hearts, Brave Dogs or Crazy Dogs.
Generally, they were selective in membership based on merit and carried associated protective and sometimes sacrificial responsibilities.
Google “Grizzly Bear Piegan- Curtis” for a historical photo and “David Yorke Bear Brave” for a painting both showing this type of headdress.
Specifically, the base for this one is a strip of Buffalo hide (10 by 2 inches) sewn to a piece of red trade cloth (11 by 6 inches) supporting a pair (the tips about 7 inches) of Antelope prongs.
The black feathers are turkey dyed black. Originally, the most common were Crow or Raven. Along the “crown” they are clipped flat (4 inches). On the back they are partially stripped and bunched. The imitation Eagle breath feathers on the back are Heritage Turkey as are the side pendant feathers representing adolescent Eagle.
There are six Porcupine quill work pieces: two rosettes; two tabs; and two wheels. Other decorations are old time brass beads, red heart beads, and hawk bells.
The final decoration is an application of horse hair down the back.
There are two thongs to secure the headdress by tying them together under the chin.
